Obituary: Hazel Grace Chord, 98, of Hendersonville and formerly of Palos Park, IL died Friday, February 26, 2010. A native of Kendall County, Illinois she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Verna Campbell. She is also preceded in death by her husband Edward Kenneth Chord and sisters Gladys, Marion, Alyce, and Ruth.
She began her teaching career in a one-room school in 1932 and taught for 11 years before she married. She resumed teaching after her children were in school and taught fourth grade for 20 years at District 118 in Palos Park, Illinois. After retiring, she taught reading enrichment to first-grade classes as a volunteer. She was praised for her “love and compassion for children and her joie de vivre.”
Surviving are her three daughters Sylvia Chord of Crestwood, IL, Carol Gasen of Streamwood, IL, and Gloria Hink and husband Norman of Hendersonville. She is also survived by her nephew, Stan Wakefield of Topeka, KS and his family.
A memorial service to celebrate Hazel’s life will be held this summer at the Wayside Chapel at The Center in Palos Park, IL. The family is grateful for the loving care Hazel received at Spring Arbor West and from Four Seasons Compassion for Life.
