Name: Rev. Dr. Richard Shelor

Obituary: The Rev. Dr. Richard Gilmer Shelor, Pastor Emeritus of the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church USA, died March 9, 2010. He was born April 4, 1925 in Salem, VA, the son of Richard Bertram Shelor and Parke Gilmer Shelor. He grew up in Draper’s Valley, VA where his maternal ancestors had a long history of serving the Presbyterian Church as ministers and missionaries. Following high school, Dr. Shelor served in the Third Army in Germany and Austria during the end of World War II and in the occupational forces after the war. Dr. Shelor graduated from Roanoke College, Salem, VA. He earned his Masters of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA and his Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL. He served pastorates in Max Meadows, VA and Wise, VA and was pastor of the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church from 1966 to 1988. Following retirement he served as interim minister of several churches in the Western North Carolina Presbytery, Presbyterian Church USA. He married Florence Lillie Harbert of Galax, VA in 1953. They have three children – John Robert Shelor, Ellenboro, NC; Anne Shelor Curry, Rutherfordton, NC; and Rev. Dr. David Kirk Shelor, Tampa, FL. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by daughters-in-law, Susan Shelor (John) and Roberta Shelor (David) and son-in-law, Mark Curry (Anne). Four grandchildren also survive him – Graham Davidson Shelor, Lillie Parke Shelor, John Curtis Shelor, and Jennifer Shelor Glass. His two sisters, Margaret Shelor Green and Emily Shelor Murray, as well as his parents, predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm, Monday, March 15. Following the service, the family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church designated to the Richard Shelor Memorial Fund.
